Iron Chef crowned, dancers lauded and anthem-singer rewarded at Harbourfront Centre’s Canada Day celebration

The Results Are In!

TORONTO, ON (July 3, 2012) – The temperature was hot, and so was the competition over the Canada Day long weekend at Harbourfront Centre. Canada Day: Going Global presented by CIBC saw a celebration of all of the things that make this country great.

Harbourfront Centre was extremely pleased to welcome 50 new Canadian citizens in a swearing-in ceremony and reception and be a part of these citizens’ first hours as Canadians. They joined thousands who celebrated our nation at the Canada Day: Going Global festival. But in and amongst the revelry was some serious competition.

The Jump-Off Junior Competition saw young bboys and bgirls employ a range of hip hop dance styles. The overall winner was David 'KidLoco' Gomez, of Toronto’s Twisted Ankles crew, who came out on top of the All Styles Battle. The big bboys took to the WestJet Stage on Monday, July 2 for the finals of The Call Out, which saw competitors from as far off as Winnipeg and Australia throw down. Victory – and a $500 prize – in the final 2-on-2 round went to Switch B and Zen, from FAB crew.

In our “O Canada” singing competition, six finalists, chosen from a flurry of online submissions, anthemed-off on the Redpath Stage. Chosen by audience voting, the winner, Jared Pot of Waterdown, Ontario, snagged the opportunity to strut his anthemic stuff on the WestJet Stage, opening for the evening’s entertainment program of Zaki Ibrahim and the Hidden Cameras.

Awesome Toronto Central, an organization that gives a bag full of $1000 cash away to an awesome project every month, awarded its July prize to Luke Anderson’s StopGap project, after hearing a series of pitches over the course of the festival. StopGap offers ramps to businesses with stairs in front of their locations to ease access for wheelchairs.

Also crowned was the winner of the culinary showdown, Iron Chef: Poutine Edition, which saw four chefs’ tasty twists on what might well be our national dish. With the secret ingredient of corn and corn starch, Matt Dean Petit of Rock Lobster Food bested Barque Smokehouse’s David Neinstein; on the other side of the draw, okra was the secret ingredient that saw Bannock’s Stephen Pynn win out over Micha Kennedy of Kennedy Kitchens. In the final, an extremely tight – “razor thin,” quoth one judge – competition, Stephen Pynn reigned supreme with his use of eggs, the final round’s secret ingredient. Host Christian Pritchard said it best: “We’re all winners here: these chefs all work in Toronto.”

Stay tuned for more competition in future summer festivals, including International Iron Chef and the audience-participatory Taco Takedown at the Hot & Spicy 15th Anniversary presented by CIBC from July 20-22.
